Fans eagerly passed through the main gates of TD Bank Ballpark on Wednesday night, many of whom were ready to support the Somerset Patriots in a battle against the Hartford Yard Goats. Instead, it quickly became evident that a delay was imminent amid fog and moderate rain in the surrounding area. The game was eventually postponed after an hour delay, with rain coming down the hardest it had all night. A groan erupted in the stadium as the decision was announced over the PA system.
Although the day ended without any baseball action in Somerset, there had been some fun amid the disappointment. Wednesday was Star Wars night, and fans were met with the opportunity to take photos with the likes of R2D2, Stormtroopers, Boba Fett, and various other Star Wars characters.
An annual celebration for the Patriots, Star Wars night gives fans the opportunity to dress as their favorite characters and participate in themed trivia. Many fans were in costume, with Jedi robes being the most popular apparel. Several of those dressed as Jedi even brought their own lightsabers, which they waved in the air as they danced in the rain.
Those dancing fans could be seen in the area behind home plate, where they moved along to upbeat rock tunes. Other fans gathered around to watch, with the Patriots' video team capturing the moment.
At that point the night was over, as puddles had begun to form on the tarp covering the infield. Fans shuffled out of the ballpark's main gates with umbrellas, hoping to protect themselves from the heavy rain. An announcement soon followed, detailing that the postponed game will be made up as a doubleheader on Thursday, August 21. Both games are to last seven innings, with the first pitch of Game one scheduled for 4 p.m.
